HMD

So this is a post that's pretty much an HMD. Tyki is a character that gets a lot of arguments about his characterization, and I am so cool with talking you through why I make the choices I make. I'm fine with providing manga pages too! I also am super happy to get advice from people who know the canon. I may have played him for years, but that doesn't mean I can't benefit from the experience and advice of others.

♠ Critiques and analysis are very welcome!

The Curiosity Shop

The Curiosity Shop can be found among the other stores, with nothing but a simple sign with a purple butterfly painted onto it to mark it as anything different than the other stained glass fronted buildings in the area. But once the door is opened, a place of strangeness and interest can be found. It's not simply a shop, and perhaps calling it a shop is a disservice to it. And to the proper shops in the area. It's closer to the love child of an odd flea market and horror art gallery in a strange museum. It's not the most comforting of places, but it's well kept and full of curiosities.

It's Tyki's way to keep busy and hoard all of his found treasures. If he can find it, and it's not obviously claimed, he'll carry it back to his shop and set it up there. Regardless of what it is. If he kills it, and it's not something intelligent, it might end up stuffed and displayed. If he can arrange it oddly? All the better. If he gets bored and makes a ridiculous frightening art project that no one will ever purchase? It's there too. The stock that is held in the shop varies constantly, and will rarely stay consistent in any way.

In the end, he doesn't care that much about actually doing business. He just wants to have a place of his own to live in and a good way to get luxuries from time to time. And by luxuries he means cigarettes and alcohol. And decent food that he doesn't have to cook.

Any reasonable, and most unreasonable trades will be considered.

Hadriel Voice Mail

[The sound of static hits for a moment, then fumbling can be heard. Then Tyki's voice can be heard muffled and irritated, but the words can still be made out, just barely.]

Stupid god-forsaken piece of junk...

[Then the noise clears, and Tyki clears his throat.]

Leave a message, will you? I'll get back to you at my earliest possible convenience.

History:
Tyki Mikk Wiki article

Please note! Tyki is from a often dark canon, and the links and information within contain disturbing material.

Personality:

Tyki Mikk is a self-made Jekyll and Hyde in one; both his dark and light sides are aware and alert in his mind. There is no one or the other with him. He does not wake up from one personality to the shock of his past deeds. No, the division between is deliberate, as is the importance of each. He likes it that way. He cultivates the sides of himself carefully. It's one of his most important personality traits to keep in consideration. Tyki wants to be both human and Noah, to keep good and bad, light and dark together for the purpose of a more interesting and exciting life.

But to understand how he can facet multiple lives this way, one must understand how the Noah family works. When the Noah Family members awaken in their human host, the Noah genes bring up power and memories and murderous urges. They hate Innocence instinctively. It's deeply entrenched into them, and some would shun what was left of their human memories, casting that part of them away to further separate themselves from humanity. While many of the Noah family take a human form when it suits them, it doesn't mean they're different in it. For them, it's just an act.

Tyki, however, did not wish to let go of his human side. He's a bit of an anomaly in that sense. He loves being a human, at least the act of being one. But he is also a Noah and strongly loves his family. He enjoys all of the horrors that come with being a part of the Noahs. Complicating things still, he has human and Noah friends alike. He really would be in a pinch, and might struggle with the act and consequences if, he was ordered to harm his human friends. But he has nothing but enjoyment in killing Exorcists, the wielders of that much loathed Innocence. Perhaps, he enjoys killing as much as he enjoys sharing his life with those he cares about. This leaves him conflicted constantly. And that brings us to his choice.

Keeping them separate is the only way for him to truly enjoy life.

But sometimes those sides do overlap, despite his best intentions. He notes after killing Daisya Barry that he would have to be careful, in order to keep both sides of his life intact. The Noah traits are violent and dominant, easily overtaking a weak host to the memories. So although he purposefully keeps himself playing the game of black and white, it's not the easiest task to succeed at. And even in his kindest moments, the Noah side of him can come through. His face twists with madness after killing Daisya, showing the bare hold that he has over the act that he's set up for himself. While he keeps himself mostly in check, the grip does loosen, and far more often than he'd like.

An example of how the lines blur as can be seen in the scene where he gave Eeze, a favorite child that worked and traveled with his group of laborers, Kevin Yeegar's silver button as a present. As Tyki was the one who brutally murdered Yeegar, it was a grotesque show of affection, but one that can be seen as frighteningly sincere as well. He seems to bring trinkets from his exorcist kills to the boy often, at least enough that Eeze asks Tyki to remember to bring him more.

Another example is how Tyki tries to comfort Allen Walker in his own way, bringing up that he too has friends. There isn't anything mocking in his tone in that point; he seems to genuinely want Allen to understand that he gets it. That he's human enough, that he has friends too, that it's nothing personal. However, the fact that he explains it at all shows that the Noahs are very detached from humans as a whole. Even Tyki, who loves them.

Tyki might claim to have a white and black side, but it's a bit more complicated than that. To break it down, there are two main forms he takes in personality during the earlier parts of D. Gray-Man.

Tyki's white side aligns with humanity at its simplest. He is a poorly mannered, badly behaved, uneducated youth. He likes cheap food, easy money, and spending time with his friends. He listens and is sympathetic and funny. He's the epitome of the common working man, who might cause a little trouble but means no true harm at all. He works hard and lives a rough life, but he's happy with every step of it. He's nearly shameless, a cheat and a brat, but lovable in the fact that he really isn't a bad person. He just represents what most find unappealing in humanity.

But as Lord Tyki Mikk, he is humanity at its most decadent. A nobleman, a favorite of the courts, with fine manners and a genteel smile. He knows how to fake kindness, and his mild temper and beautiful face make him incredibly popular with the wealthy ladies that flock to his family. This personality is what will most likely be seen before he kills. He loves blood and death, he thrills at his own cruelty, and his elegance is matched only by his sadism. While he still has moments of humor and silliness, able to be bossed around by The Earl and Road and playing the big brother role, he's more monster than man in this black part of his soul. No amount of laziness and helping with homework will change that.

But things are further complicated after Allen Walker attempts to exorcise Tyki, allowing his inner Noah Joyd to come through and take control. Following this, his personality traits seem blurred now to some degree. And although he has a human life as Lord Tyki Mikk, Tyki the vagrant has not been shown since. It can be easily assumed that for now, that part of him has been replaced by the noble for his white side. The personality of this blended Tyki is murderer and big brother in one, more teasing and a little rough around the edges, but finely mannered compared to his earlier white personality. At the canon point that I'll be taking him from, he will be mixing all of the traits above.

As long as he can enjoy life, in multiple ways, without having to be forced to choose one or another, Tyki will enjoy himself. No matter what world he finds himself in.

Inventory:

Part of Tyki's abilities make him able to use his own body to store seemingly unlimited amounts of things within himself. He uses his body to store the cannibal golems he was gifted, and there does not seem to be a canon limit on how many he can store within. Using this logic, I assume that he uses his body to store other things as well.

Tyki will be bringing an unknown amount of Teez.
He will have some matches, several packs of cigarettes, a flask, his garments, and a deck of cards.

Abilities:

Tyki is a frightening man, whose abilities leave his foes absolutely demolished. He carries traits of the pinnacle of super soldiers, with incredibly enhanced speed and strength, and frightening reflexes as well. This is on top of his Noah abilities, that allow him to command the Akuma and destroy Innocence with nothing more than a touch.

He can shape the Dark Matter to suit him, in strands or blasts. He can drench his body in it, to armor himself and protect himself from damage.

But that's not what makes him so terrifying. It's in what he chooses to do. Tyki's ability is Choose. As the Noah of Pleasure, he can simply choose what he interacts with and how, and if he does at all. With the exception of Innocence, the world is his to interact with as he pleases.

Phasing seems to be his favorite use of his abilities, and his favorite way to kill. He can remove an organ from a body without a cut, put a Teez into someone to kill them slowly as a nursery, or even remove a limb as if it simply ceased to be joined where it was originally. This part of his ability could also be used for non-violent tasks. Locked doors could simply be reached through or stepped through, rainy days could be avoided by having the drops simply pass through him.

He can choose to walk on water or air as if it was the ground. While not explored heavily in canon, this ability could allow him protection and further exploration of the world around him.

If threatened, or truly serious about a fight, Tyki can Reject parts of reality. This was seen when he was fighting Allen Walker, and he rejected air pressure and oxygen. While a very dangerous ability trait to have, it's not one that he uses often. And he can't reject Innocence, although he can destroy it. It can still harm him.

He also comes standard equipped with Teez, a flesh eating butterfly golem colony that lives within him. They breed by devouring humans, and he can use them in battle by making shields from them.

As far as abilities that are not related to Dark Matter or Noah genes, Tyki is a former miner and odd job jack of all trades. He's a talented poker player, both in the honest and dishonest plays. He speaks presumably English and Portuguese, and as a member of the nobility he would be skilled in the expected behaviors needed for court life. He's notedly a good dancer, he knows how to converse with the upper class, and one can assume that he knows the sort of games and rules needed to succeed. He's also able to catch fish easily.

Flaws:

Tyki is a delightful mix of murder and kindness, more flaw than anything else. He's chaotic to the core, a human that loves his friends but is influenced by a power older and more monstrous than he is. He murders with no small amount of glee, and happily gives trophies from those murders to small children. While he's not evil, his behavior certainly can be. He's lazy and stubborn, difficult and loving, a mess of traits that really don't fit well together. He has no issue with theft or assault, his morality more about the situation than absolutes.

He's certainly no pure cinnamon roll, and perfect for the door to pull through.

I'm adding a sample as well, a more in depth version of my comment to the Test Drive meme. Thank you for your consideration.

[Tyki doesn't mind being alone. Not here, at least.

He has the Teez tucked soundly within him to give him the illusion of company, butterfly whispers echoing in his heart. And he has the reminder of who he is and was still rattling around in his head like old bones. And finally, he has the fact that he has never really been desperate for companionship in general to comfort him.

It takes a special person to be worth his time, anyway.

He's not lonely at all.

He's fine, really. Really.

But sometimes, without a link to his family, he feels uncomfortable. Maybe uncomfortable isn't the right word for it. Maybe... A bit lost. Hollow inside, just barely. And he hates it. He loathes his emotions sometimes, things like that make him unsettled and irritated. Like the silent town around him, he feels empty and discontent. No matter how hard he tries to deny it, without the other Noah near he can't find a sense of peace.

Stupid feelings. Stupid town. Stupid thoughts dragging him back to reality, when he'd prefer to choose denial. Or distraction.

So when those thoughts take over in the quiet of the abandoned streets, he decides to indulge in retail therapy. It's best when it's free, after all.

That, and he's beginning to get hungry. Pesky things, stomachs. Especially when they start yelling at a person, demanding food and so forth.

Finally focusing on his growling innards to distract him, he heads into a nearby shop, one that seems to have had a wide array of items in the past, and he starts rifling through the options behind the counter. Meager pickings, no feasts to be had here, but beggars and thieves have little right to complain about variety.

He stacks a few things, and turns to sort through more, hoping to find a stiff drink locked away somewhere. So far, he's had little luck. But he hums a bit to himself as he works, keeping busy and keeping thoughts at bay through his self-appointed task.

Crisp and dapper in his suit, he almost looks like a shopkeeper restocking goods.]

[OOC]

Backtagging: Yes.
Threadhopping: Yes.
Fourthwalling: Maybe. Run it past me first.
Offensive subjects (elaborate): I personally don't have interest in any continuous contact with heavily racist/homophobic/sexist/transphobic characters. Although I'm fine with occasional IC interactions, I hear enough of it daily IRL to want to avoid it in my fun times. I'll tolerate it on occasion if it's plot important. But if I can't have the conversation shift from it, I may drop the thread. No offense meant!

[IC]

Hugging this character: Yes, but he may choose to sidestep or push you away. Choose. Haha. Oh I crack me up.
Kissing this character: Run it past me, please.
Flirting with this character: Yes.
Fighting with this character: I am always up for a fight, but would prefer to discuss things OOC because of Tyki's unique powers. Let's get bloody!
Injuring this character (include limits and severity): He's actually kind of hard to injure. I'm so down for it, but it takes special situations to do anything lasting to him. Again, let's discuss that shit and have a blast.
Killing this character: I'd rather not? Again, it's hard to do.
Using telepathy/mind reading abilities on this character: Could be fun, let's discuss it though.

Warnings: Tyki can be a really nasty bastard. Like, pull the still beating heart from your chest with a smile nasty. He can be super fun and friendly! But he's also a murderous monster. So certain threads might get triggery. I will never push his abilities on anyone, and all battle or murder threads will have OOC talk from the muns to make sure we're on the same page. It's supposed to be fun, after all. And if you want to just have the Tyki that smokes and plays cards and loafs about? That's fine. If you want the sexy murder machine that is fine too. ♥
